Got the book today. Like the review on the cover: it is a book to be carried in the pocket. I am in summery dress, so i walk with it in my hand. Went to a Sichuan restaurant in the city. Ordered Marinated Chicken (kou-shui ji), Sautéed Pork Intestines (huo-bao fei-chang) and Clear Noodle in Chilli Sauce (Si-chuan liang-mian). When i picked my teeth with my tasty fingers, the manager kindly observed and offered toothpick to me. i thanked him for his five-star service. He smiled and went back to the counter and asked about my son and how he is doing, as we used to be diners in his restaurant. i got to know he got a PhD in Pharmacy, and his wife, no, as he corrected, his partner, who was usually around in the reastaurant but not today, is a double PhD holder. He said she was always over the top in her subject. 'I thought you were Pearl River Delta peasant entrepreneurs.' He laughed and told me he is from Tianjin. He was one of the five winners of scholarship alloted to North China years ago. Now his son is doing A Level, dashing for LSE (London School of Economics and Political Science), as is a dream to almost all BBC (British-born Chinese). His son grew up in England from age 4, and spent three years in China for his secondary school -- to pick up proper Chinese and get some 'good' influence from the hard-working Chinese pupils -- as his parents so wished. The manager's ex wife is in London, he told me. When i asked if she got married, he said he did not know and that is her privacy. i felt slightly intrusive, but he soon dismissed my unease by saying, 'Well, we all settle down now.' I don't know how to properly conduct a coversation with man, oddly, i mean, face to face, that is a problem of me living in recluse for quite long and having no problem with it.
